1 Month Update, Kona Hawaii

Hello Friends and Family,

It has been almost exactly one month since I have arrived here in Kona, Hawaii!  It’s been an indescribable time.  I think of home, University of Maryland fellowship, the prayer furnace, my marvelous comrades and reminisce on the comfort and warmth of home.  I have been praying for you and am so excited for the DMV Prayer Summit starting this Thursday! I will be praying for you as you lead the DMV into crying out for revival!

Freedom Week

This week’s Freedom week taught by Matthew Nelson lead me into new revelations of some strongholds I have in my life.  It was a little harder for me to push through this week but God was faithful and pulled me through!  When I heard about “Freedom week” I thought it was just the same as purity/inner healing but it was totally different.

One revelation I received through the teaching was that the opposite of faith is passivity.  Being passive in relationships, with commitments, to appointments and even in our relationship with God is a form of rebellion.   People who have some passivity in their life say “That is just my personality. I can’t change it.”  But it’s still a form of saying “I don’t care enough about you to value your time and schedule.”  We need to be active, not passive and actively pursue back our pursuer.

We as students awkwardly fumbled our way through this week trying to be something we naturally are not.  For some of us, we fought the spirit of rejection by actively initiating conversations with others first and walking boldly as a son or daughter who is completely accepted by Christ.  For others of us, we fought off the spirit of fear by walking in boldness and courage continually through out the day.

24 Hour Burn

This past Friday our whole campus participated in the 24 Hour Burn that was pioneered by our Fire & Fragrance School.  For 24 hour burns, students prayed for revival of hearts and nations.  One friend of mine stayed 24 hours in the prayer room, praying and fasting and had angelic encounters.  It was a powerful time.

I had the awesome opportunity of leading the school into worship for a set.  Below is a picture of some of our awesome band members, the “Kibok Band.”

Prayer Requests:

(1)  There’s no place like home.  I’ve been missing my family and dog Bok Shi Ree a little more this month.  Please pray that I will take full advantage of my time here and be wise in the way that I spend my time.  Please pray for an increased hunger for the Word and to spend time with Jesus.

(2)  Fundraising.  I will be doing some fundraising here on campus.  Please pray that God’s hand would be on all fundraisers that I do and that He would bless it by a 100fold! =P

Getting to Know You.

This month I feel God deepening my friendships here with the students in Fire & Fragrance.  I’m so grateful and thankful for my friends that I get to rejoice with, cry with, be very tired with & just enjoy during this season of my life.  Here are some pictures of my these friends I’m getting to know and love.

He-Brews Coffeehouse & Week 1 Update, Kona Hawaii

He-Brews Coffeehouse

I wanted to again thank everyone so much for coming out to the Hebrews Coffeehouse September 24th, before I left for my Discipleship Training School in Kona, Hawaii.  Thank you so much to Higher Connection Church and all the performers and my friends who helped organize & make it a wonderful show.  I especially wanted to thank Rick Lee aka Lyricks for coming out to the show.

I didn’t have the chance to know Rick before this show so we were very lucky to have him.  Rick is also a YWAMer so I got to hear his awesome stories and testimonies.  I was so grateful that a performer of his distinction joined us that night.  His display of humility humbled me and sparked a desire in me to be as humble as him as a performer/worshipper.

The same goes for my good friend Jason Min who drove all the way from Philadelphia on the night before his birthday to join us for the event.  My interactions with Jason have been few but deep because of distance.  I am truly so lucky that God brought him into my life as a brother.  Jason’s humility is also so evident in his life.  On top of his incredible talent, popularity and crazy-smartness(haha) he is so real and incredibly easy to love.  And he also got engaged the weekend of the show!  SO happy for him!

Week 1 Update, Kona Hawaii

I have successfully completed my first week here at YWAM’s DTS in Kona, Hawaii.  The blur of orientations, classes & meetings make it feel like more than only seven days.  I miss you, I think of you often.  I’m so thankful for you.  I want to thank you so much for praying for me & for supporting me.  I cannot say it enough.  Without you; my friends and family, I would not be able to be here today and have this amazing experience.  I’m so thankful that God has blessed me with such incredible friends.  Thank you also for praying for my family. :)

I have categorized my thoughts below:

Struggles at Kona

1.  Ants.  Tiny. Ants. Everywhere.  The first day it was horrible.  They’re on the counters.  They’re on the floor.  They were in my bed the first night until we raided them out! I’m so paranoid about these ants my imagination tricks me into slapping my arm at random times at a brush of my hair or I constantly scratch my head thinking they are crawling in there.  (hahaha, oh so fun!)

2.  Bilingual?  Not.  So as you know, I am Korean-American and cannot speak a lick of Korean.  Well, maybe just a lick.  But a 5th grader could school me in a Korean spelling bee, lets put it that way.  Since I am in the bilingual school here, there are many Korean born from South Korea a part of the class.  Although I really want to get to know them, the language barrier makes it very difficult.  But I know love comes through even languages so God will teach me to love even despite my language barrier. =]

Wonderful, amazing things about Kona

1.  Geckos, beautiful flowers, the ocean that is .5 miles away, being bare foot wherever you go are just to name a few.  I was at first a little taken aback and weirded out at how everyone was so nice here.  I would wonder, are they for real?  Why is everyone so smiley and happy? And in conversations I would hear “Amen! Praise Jesus!” so casually. It was so foreign to me that everyone I encounter is so in love with Jesus.  But after a few days I got used to it and realized that of course they are genuine because they would not travel half way across the world just to relax.  They came to encounter Jesus.  You will also find that people will randomly break out in praise and songs to Jesus in the lunch line.  Today while serving food for the students here, I suddenly broke out in “This little light of mineeee, im gonna let it shineee!”  I have been infected with the singing bug.  I can’t wait for the day we have a worship session break out in line! haha

2.  Freedom.  The perfect way to describe YWAM is as a greenhouse.  This place has the perfect amount of water, just the right temperature and sunlight for you to grow with God.  The first day our school leader Andy Byrd shared the gospel message in the most simple yet most profound way I’ve ever heard.  I realized literally the first day of classes that I have bought into the lie that I can do anything for God that will impress Him or make Him love me more.  It is not by works but by grace that we have been saved.(Ephesians 2:8)  What brings freedom here is the fact that there are no expectations of you to be a bible-thumping Christian.  There is no expectation for you to read 10 chapters of the bible a day, pray for four hours and be the best Christian you can be.  They just want you to encounter Jesus more and more.  I found so much freedom and peace in this.  I know that God will continue to reveal even more of who He is in new and profound ways during my time here at YWAM.

Japan Outreach

We will be going on Outreach to either Japan, N. Korea, S. Korea, China, Israel or Oman on December 14th.  My two desired locations are 1. Japan 2. Israel.  I feel that God has been leading me to pray for Japan right around when I started praying about going to YWAM.  I think I humorously received confirmation that I will be going to Japan today because this Korean
born lady came up to me and was so surprised I was speaking Korean.  She looks at me and says “Omgosh, you’re korean!?  I thought you were Japanese!” And then another Korean girl next to her chimes in “Yea! I thought so too!”

Me & My Unnies.  Su Hye & Hwa-In Unnie.  Do you think I look Japanese?

Prayer Requests:

(1)  Tomorrow, Saturday October 8th is the world wide Iron Man competition where Olympic athletes and athletes from all across the world come to Kona, Hawaii to see if they can successfully finish the race. Please pray for the safety of the athletes, my classmates and myself who are volunteering and for the City of Kona to be revived by the Spirit of God!

(2)  Finances.  A girl from my class that I do not know prayed for me today.  God  lead her to pray for my finances for outreach and for an increase in faith  This prayer was right on and I will definitely extend more faith in believing that God will provide the finances for my outreach phase!  I cannot wait to email a praise report!

Me & Papa Loren Cunningham, founder of YWAM!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE YOU!!

Keep God In Your Heart,

Sarah
